macOS 15 Sequoia builds on macOS 14 Sonoma by introducing iPhone notification mirroring, many new AI features, and more!
iOS 14 introduced App Library and Home Screen widgets, but the iPad missed out until iPadOS 15. iOS 16 introduced a customizable Lock Screen, but the iPad missed out until iPadOS 17. There's a good reason why these features, and more, have come to iPad a year after iPhone.
One of the benefits of Personal Voice is that it plays over the phone. This means, if you want your personal voice to be your voicemail/answering system greeting, you can call into your system and play your personal voice phrase over the phone.
Sometime after the release of macOS 14 beta 6, over 100 new Aerial wallpapers showed up in macOS 14 Sonoma when Apple added them to the macOS wallpaper servers. This could mean macOS 15's new Aerial wallpapers, if any, will also be available in macOS 14, and Apple can release new wallpapers outside of OS updates.
visionOS, previously known as xrOS, not unlike macOS 11 being known as 10.16 initially, is the operating system that powers the Apple Vision Pro XR headset and other future Apple Vision XR headsets. It's based on iOS and has some design elements of macOS 11-present. Animations are different than on macOS and iOS, which means macOS' lack of some animations seen in iOS isn't so weird after all.
The EU is forcing Apple to switch the iPhone to USB-C. It's also forcing Apple to allow installing apps from outside the App Store on iOS/iPadOS. This is known as app sideloading, and is something Apple has never wanted to allow.
Announced in May 2023 ahead of WWDC, Personal Voice allows you to create a TTS voice that sounds like you, and is useful for those who are at risk of losing their ability to speak. Some people might use it simply because of how cool it is! Let's take a look at how to set up and use this feature.
With watchOS 10, Apple platforms are now all on double-digit version numbers! Or are they?!
10 years ago, iOS 7 was introduced, and with it, an all-new design language for Apple's UI, with beautiful translucent materials, slick animations, and from 2015 onwards, haptics. Apple also introduced watchOS in 2015 and renamed iOS for Apple TV to tvOS, and renamed iOS for iPad to iPadOS in 2019. For 2023, Apple is introducing another new platform, visionOS, for its "extended reality" (XR) headset, Apple Vision Pro!
iOS 17 introduces a feature called Live Voicemail, which will transcribe a caller's voicemail in real time, with the option to answer the call. Wait, what? If voicemail answered the call, how would you still be able to answer it?!
Betas of Apple OS releases were once only available to members of the Apple Developer Program who paid $99/year. Then, in 2014, the Apple Beta Software Program was launched, which allowed anyone to try out more polished betas. Now, for 2023, Apple has FINALLY made developer betas free to any Apple developer, following the beta update changes made in January 2023! The Apple Beta Software Program still exists for those who want more polished betas. Let's compare Apple's offerings to the channels of the Windows Insider Program.
iOS 16/iPadOS 17 introduced the ability to customize the Lock Screen and to have more than one. The Lock Screen used to be powered by an app called SpringBoard, but that's no longer the case. Instead, the new Lock Screen is powered by PosterBoard. SpringBoard continues to power the Home Screen.
As rumored, iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 bring some of the most highly-requested features, continuing to make everything look and feel way too slick and beautiful!
macOS 14 Sonoma continues to turn concepts into reality with ultra-slick UI updates and more, and begins the next generation of the futuristic macOS era! And for the first time ever, I'm installing the beta on day 1, and betas are now available to free developers as well!
Accessibility Doesn't Have To Be Ugly: Ultra-Slick New Features Coming To iOS 17/macOS 14!5/18/2023 As of May 2021, to celebrate Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Apple now teases new accessibility features ahead of WWDC via a press release weeks before WWDC starts in June. For 2023, Apple is introducing ultra-slick and futuristic new features which will help make devices more accessible.
In recent months, an Apple leaker has been posting about features which are expected to launch with iOS 17 when it's announced at WWDC 2023 on June 5. On 5/10/23, the leaker was either banned from social media or simply decided to delete their accounts, and their sister, who was a former Apple employee, was fired from Apple due to sharing confidential information with the leaker.
Apple fans love not only Apple products, but also Apple Stores. Apple Stores are not just stores--2016 and later ones are designed as places to hang out and relax, and all Apple Stores have display devices you can try out.
iOS 17 was believed to be a smaller update, focusing on performance improvements, but as of recently, the focus has shifted and now major changes are expected. Sound familiar?
Since the introduction of tvOS public betas in 2017 (or maybe earlier for developer betas), Apple has been using a much simpler approach to how users enable beta updates. Instead of installing a profile, users signed into either iCloud or the App Store with an Apple ID enrolled in a beta program can easily turn beta updates on or off through Software Update settings. Now, in iOS 16.4, iOS is getting this same treatment.
Apple is rumored to be releasing a 15 inch NotchBook Air in April 2023. This will be the first time since 2016 that the MacBook Air is available in 2 size options. However, 15 inches is too large for a device designed to be thin and light, like the MacBook Air.
The Mac Studio was launched in March 2022, as a tide-me-over for those waiting for the Apple Silicon Mac Pro, or for those who were expecting an Apple Silicon 27 inch iMac. The former is coming, but the Mac Studio replaced the latter. The Mac Studio, at least the M1 Ultra version, now looks set to be replaced by the Apple Silicon Mac Pro. But since that was known to be coming since day 1 of the Apple Silicon transition, that likely wasn't the plan at the time.
In iOS 16.3, you can now customize the Lock Screen you had before upgrading to iOS 16. This means you can now add widgets and customize fonts without giving up dark mode wallpapers or older device-exclusive ones.
With Apple long out of the Steve Jobs era, with things like the end of Mac OS X, renaming of Preferences to Settings, keyboards and trackpads on iPads, and increasing convergence of platforms, it's about time we see a touchscreen MacBook. However, Apple still refuses to make a touchscreen MacBook, with Tim Cook comparing the concept of such a device to a toaster-fridge combo.
Due to Apple focusing on developing its mixed reality headset and the xrOS operating system that will run on it, macOS 14, iOS 17, iPadOS 17, tvOS 17, and watchOS 10 may be smaller than initially planned.
